Glebe Studio
Located in a heritage conservation area at the end of a small cul-de-sac in Sydney’s inner west, Glebe Studio mediates between a historic stable and a 1960s brick apartment block. The studio is a contemporary double height structure elevated above a semi-enclosed carport.
The project was commissioned by clients who live in a Victorian terrace fronting the site. The family sought a separate self-contained dwelling flexible enough to cater for changing needs; guest and rental accommodation and an option for parents to downsize when the children move out.
The external cladding of Glebe Studio creates a contemporary and robust urban edge to the street, softened with perforated bifold shutters enveloping a small balcony.
Inside the double height volume, a simple and warm material palette creates a bright and private retreat for inhabitants.
The asymmetrical gable has afforded space for a mezzanine which is accessed via a sideways retractable ladder that can offer additional room for the living area. Multifunctional custom joinery provides efficient storage without compromising the openness of the interior.
The considered treatment of openings allows a play of light and shadow throughout the day. Bifold shutters offer the opportunity to interact with the street, while inviting sunlight to flow through the perforated slots. A translucent polycarbonate wall produces diffused light for the internal space and visual disconnection from the client’s garden. Together with operable skylights, louvred windows on the sides of the polycarbonate wall promote cross ventilation while also maintaining privacy.
